What is the role of KPTA in tenders?

KPTA (Kuwait Public Authority for Industry) regulates industrial-zone activity and imposes equipment-conformity and safety requirements on industrial estate occupants — Shuaiba Industrial Area, Mina Abdullah, and the planned Al-Zour expansion. KPTA does not run equipment tenders directly but its compliance regime shapes equipment specification for any project sited inside an industrial zone, particularly around hazardous-area classification, fire and gas systems, and waste-handling equipment.

Which IPP projects are upcoming?

Al-Zour North Phase 2 and Phase 3 IPP additions are in active procurement, targeting combined-cycle gas turbine plants of 1,500-2,000 MW each. The Al-Khairan IWPP is in earlier-stage feasibility. Renewables under Shagaya phase 3 are targeting solar PV with battery storage, tendered through Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP, the PPP authority). Equipment procurement for these projects runs through the appointed IPP / IWPP developer; suppliers engage at developer-level rather than directly with MEW.

Transmission and distribution

Kuwait transmits at 132 kV and 400 kV; distribution is at 11 kV. HV switchgear (GIS and AIS), power transformers, MV switchgear, distribution transformers, and the supporting protection and control are all consistent procurement lines.

Auxiliary systems

Boiler feed pumps, condensate pumps, cooling-water pumps, fans, plus motors and drives. Cooling-water at the coastal plants is seawater — the corrosion design point is severe.

Vendor approval and tendering

MEW runs tenders through the Central Tenders Committee. Approval typically requires manufacturer documentation, type test certificates, and a track record on comparable installations.

Logistics

Shuwaikh Port and Shuaiba Port handle most industrial imports. Kuwait International Airport handles urgent spares. Customs duty is typically 5%; clearance is efficient.
